Mother's day is coming up and whilst many may think it's just another event designed by card companies, it actually has its roots in the Christian calendar. 'Mothering Sunday' was originally a day during lent in which the maids of a household were given a day off to visit their 'mother' church with other female relatives. Often they would pick flowers to take home for their mother's. Eventually this tradition became the celebration of motherhood that we see today.
